Healthy Hollywood: Wellness Wednesday – Jennifer Lopez’s Cougar Town!

Healthy Hollywood: Wellness Wednesday – Jennifer Lopez's Cougar Town!

November 30, 2011

There's a new cougar on the block - Jennifer Lopez! The mega-star is hooking up with her oh-so sexy back-up dancer, Casper Smart – 18 years her junior. "Yes, they are dating and having a good time," a source told People magazine.

Healthy Hollywood says, "You go, girl!" Jennifer is a powerful, independent woman – who at 42 - showed the world at the recent "American Music Awards" she can rock a nude bodysuit better than most women - at any age. So, why not have some strapping young guy by her side?

There's no shock and awe to these May-December romances, thanks to other high-profile females, like Madonna, Halle Berry, Demi Moore, and Mariah Carey. It's about time mature (aka sexy) women had the choice (without judgment) to date whomever they like! After all, Hollywood men have been flaunting their younger catches for aeons. Just think Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta-Jones, or George Clooney who always seems to have some young-thing of the moment by his side.

Thanks to a healthy diet and a solid fitness regimen, 40-plus women are taking better care of themselves and can certainly rival the looks of a female half her age. "For a 40-something year old it's about the way you train, eat, and confuse the body so it doesn't hold onto that southern comfort sag," states workout expert Marc Montemerlo, the group fitness instructor at Equinox in West Hollywood. Yes, 40-plus women need to work harder to defy gravity and keep their bodies tight - but it can be done! Madonna and Jennifer Lopez's younger suitors certainly don't complain about their leading ladies' bodies.

Flabby arms, drooping breasts, and a saggy bum can be a 40-plus woman's trouble spots. "These are all challenging areas to train, but it can be done, not in isolation though, rather by doing total body workouts followed by low intensity cardio sessions," reveals Marc.

So, whether you're an older woman romancing a younger man (or just fantasizing about it), thanks to a few of Hollywood's A-listers, dipping into the younger man dating pool is not only acceptable, but applauded.

As a 40-plus woman, I love nothing more than a flirty exchange with a 20-something guy! It's flattering to know you've still got it.

Plus, there's no question a younger guy's body is a sight to behold – tight and toned! Case in point – my 23-year-old personal trainer, who is my cougar crush, and I unabashedly flirt at the gym and in text messages. Our textual chemistry is hot! I am not crossing that line – but it's ego-affirming to know I can – if I want!

Healthy Hollywood: Get Movin’ Monday – Holiday Workout Game Is On!

Healthy Hollywood: Get Movin' Monday – Holiday Workout Game Is On!

November 28, 2011

It's the Monday after Thanksgiving and Healthy Hollywood is feeling a bit on the bloated side! After a weekend of feasting – who isn't?

Now, is the time to burn off those calories and get your workout game back on track! There's no excuse to put exercise on pause, just because it's the season of drink, eat, and be merry. "One way you can increase your chances of staying on the wagon during these months is to pre-plan your exercise schedule for the entire season, allowing for parties and shopping," states Burr Leonard, founder of The Bar Method. Burr also adds, "If friends say, 'Come have a holiday drink with us!' tell them, 'Okay, but I'll be late because working out is on my calendar.'"

Burr created The Bar Method, which is a full body workout that combines Pilates and ballet moves. It's the perfect regimen during the busy holiday season – and beyond. In a short amount of time, these moves will leave you with a firm butt and a well-toned body, the ideal results to shimmy into that snug-fitting holiday party outfit. "Celebrities like Drew Barrymore and Ricki Lake love the workout because it safely puts them "into the muscle" right away, which gives them quick, efficient results," adds Burr.

"One great feature of the Bar Method is that it's a quick "in-and-out" workout. You're finished in an hour, and you usually don't sweat so profusely that you have to start your day from scratch," reveals Burr. "The workout is very calming and serves as a great antidote to holiday-induced stress. All in all, the Bar Method on a regular basis is a perfect gift to yourself while you're gift hunting for others.

Burr shares with Healthy Hollywood a few of her favorite – most effective - toning moves.

1. The Bar Method Parallel Thigh with Legs Apart (slims thighs & inner leg muscles):
Face your bar or a stable piece of furniture. Stand about half an arm's length from it and hold on with both hands. Stand with feet hip width apart and parallel to each other. Raise your heels to a comfortably high position. Maintain a vertical torso and relaxed lower back. Bend your knees forward and come about a thigh of the way down in height from your standing position. When you start to bend your knees a little more and a little less, maintain the high-heel position of your feet! Do 50 small down-ups at medium speed (move one inch down and one inch up by slightly bending and unbending your knees).

2. The Bar Method Diamond Thigh (tones and narrows thighs, lifts butt):
Start this exercise by facing a bar or a stable piece of furniture. Stand about a half an arm's length from it and hold on with both hands. Then get feet into position by turning feet into a wide V - turn out hips and keep heels together. Raise your heels high but only to the height where your feet still feel comfortable. Next, grip your glutes and draw in your abs. Bend your knees until you are about a third lower than you were when you were standing. Repeat.

3. The Bar Method Standing Seat (overall body toner):
Stand comfortably a few inches away from your bar or piece of furniture and hold onto it with both hands. Place your feet in a narrow V shape so that your heels are together and your big toes are three inches or so apart. Soften your knees. Roll your hips under and firmly grip your glutes. Press your chest slightly forward, square your shoulders, and straighten back. Now lift one leg (your "working leg"), point your foot, and rest it on the floor about six inches behind you. Raise your work foot a few inches off the floor. Tuck again. Lift your chest again. Begin to rhythmically exhale and pull in your abs.

Healthy Hollywood: Fab Food Friday – Salma Hayek’s Secret To De-Bloat After The Holiday!

Healthy Hollywood: Fab Food Friday – Salma Hayek’s Secret To De-Bloat After The Holiday!

November 25, 2011

Ah, the day after Thanksgiving – feeling stuffed? Me too! After a high-calorie feast of turkey, mashed potatoes, and pumpkin pie – I could use a little help in the de-bloat zone.

A good post-Thanksgiving sweat first thing in the morning is an excellent way to feel a tad lighter and set the stage for a healthier day of eating. Also, go for a veggie-packed juice – it will help ease the over-consumption blues. “A great way to de-bloat is to have an Essential Green juice in the morning,” reveals juicing expert, Eric Helms, who co-founded the Cooler Cleanse with Salma Hayek.

For years, Eric has been Salma’s go-to guy to help her get red carpet ready or shed a few extra pounds. Eric shares with Healthy Hollywood the secrets to one of Salma’s favorite de-bloat juices – Cooler Cleanse’s Essential Green juice. “It has dark green vegetables which contains essential vitamins and minerals crucial for the cleansing functions of the kidneys and liver. These greens are highly alkalizing to your cells – this counters the damage done by the corrosive acidic waste products from all the meat, sugar, dairy and other common foods you had during Thanksgiving dinner,” adds Eric.

A simple trick for parents is to lead by example. “It’s proven that if you eat your veggies, your kids will too. Serve them as snacks and in fun ways, like hummus dip while watching a movie on family night,” suggests Marcus.

Green Leaf Juice Ingredients:

Handful of spinach

3 stalks of celery

Small handful of parsley

3 leaves of green kale

2 Barlett pears, seeded

¼ lemon, peeled

½ cucumber, peeled

Bunch up spinach, parsley, and kale, and push through juicer with celery, and pear. Follow with cucumber and lemon. Scrape off the foam and serve over ice. For variation, add dandelion greens or watercress.

Try drinking a green juice for breakfast or breakfast and lunch and then eat well for the rest of day, such as lean proteins & lots of veggies. “It helps your body run better, feel cleaner, and look brighter and younger because you ease the digestive process by replacing regular meals with delicious, fresh-pressed vegetables and fruit juices. You feel lighter and more energized,” states Eric.

Healthy Hollywood: Wellness Wednesday – Make Veggies Kid-Friendly!

November 23, 2011

As most parents know, getting your kids to eat their veggies can be a challenge. Greens on a plate can turn dinnertime into a not so pleasant experience – as parents beg and plead with their child to eat just a few bites.

Now, add in the holiday season, with all the extra goodies around the home, and well, parents can get downright crazy trying to make sure their child's daily diet isn't one massive sugar-fest.

Enter celebrity chef, Marcus Samuelsson, who has worked closely with First Lady Michelle Obama's 'Let's Move!' Campaign, to make nutritious foods more accessible to children everywhere. Marcus is now working on the 'Feed Kids Better' initiative from Birds Eye, which has teamed up with Share Our Strength's 'No Kid Hungry' campaign to help kids discover the wonder of vegetables. "We want people to eat vegetables because they want to…not because they have to!" states Marcus.

A simple trick for parents is to lead by example. "It's proven that if you eat your veggies, your kids will too. Serve them as snacks and in fun ways, like hummus dip while watching a movie on family night," suggests Marcus.

Another tip, don't try and hide veggies in your child's food, instead if you're child only likes one veggie, get creative and serve that one vegetable in as many ways as you can. "If your picky eater only likes corn, for example, put it on repeat! Try it a couple different ways; corn salsa, corn and black bean quesadillas or holiday-favorite corn casserole" are all fun examples.

Finally, Marcus suggests making veggies the star of a kid-friendly dinner classic. "Flipping the proportions to your favorite meals is a quick, easy way to incorporate more veggies into family meals." So, go 60% veggies and 40% pasta – like Marcus' take on Mac & Cheese.

Mac & Greens Recipe:

(Serves 8)

Ingredients:

2 cups Birds Eye Pure & Simple Chopped Spinach, thawed

1 package orecchiette

1 stick butter

½ cup thinly sliced shallots

2 garlic cloves, minced

1 quart heavy cream

1 cup whole milk

½ pound cheddar cheese, shredded

¼ pound Parmesan, grated

¼ pound Swiss cheese, shredded

¼ pound creme fraiche

1 tsp. ground nutmeg

1 tsp. yellow mustard powder

2 tbs. all-purpose flour

½ cup panko

½ cup toasted bread crumbs

½ cup parsley

¼ cup basil leaves

¼ cup grated Parmesan

½ tsp. salt

½ tsp. pepper

Pre-heat oven to broiler setting at 375 F. Cook the orecchiette. Drain and set aside. Melt the butter in a stock pot, and saute shallots until caramelized then stir in flour. Add garlic, heavy cream and milk and stir until flour is dissolved, with no lumps. Bring to boil. Reduce heat to low, then add all cheeses, including creme fraiche. Whisk until cheese mixed in. Then, mix in nutmeg, mustard powder, salt and pepper. Toss pasta together with sauce and spinach and transfer to baking dish.

In a food processor, blend panko, bread crumbs, parsley, basil, Parmesan, salt and pepper until fine. Sprinkle breadcrumb topping over the pasta and place in oven. Broil for 5 to 8 minutes, until golden brown.

Healthy Hollywood: Get Movin’ Monday - Reform Your Core Like Emma Stone!

Healthy Hollywood: Get Movin' Monday - Reform Your Core Like Emma Stone!

November 21, 2011

Ah, Healthy Hollywood is always on the hunt for the latest and greatest way to achieve amazing abs. Recently, Healthy Hollywood discovered the ab-flattening CorePlus Reformer by Gaiam.

These lightweight resistance bands joined in an X, mimic the resistance action of a Pilates reformer (the contraption that looks like a torture apparatus), but helps create a long, lean body. I've always wanted to try the reformer, but sessions can cost upwards of $100 a pop – and that's a lot of cash in these wallet-tight times.

The CorePlus Reformer promises a similar experience to the Pilates reformer – and you don't even have to leave home. It will help you stretch, tone, and sculpt, states celebrity Pilates expert, Mari Winsor. "The CorePlus Reformer adds resistance to your workout and allows you to work deeper into the muscles for the best results in record time." Plus, in-shape stars, like Emma Stone, Brooke Shields, and Sandra Bullock are all fans of these stretchy bands. Hey, if it's good enough for them – it might just be the ticket to tighten my core.

"I especially like the CorePlus Reformer because it supports the Pilates concept of creating a two way stretch in all your exercises. When practicing two way stretch, all movement and stability comes from the core," reveals Mari. "From your waist everything lengthens away from the core. We are constantly taking body weight away from your center, thus decompressing the body. When you add resistance from the CorePlus Reformer, you are sculpting and toning elongated muscles. You can develop that long lean dancer look we all love."

Motivated to try? Healthy Hollywood is…

Mari shares 3 of her favorite core exercises to get you started.

1. TEASER
I love doing the teaser with the CorePlus Reformer because you can use it to work deeply into the core without the aggravation of neck and back pain. Sitting, place one handle from the two stretchy cable loops around each foot. Hold on to the two other loops (close to the button) with both hands. Raise your legs to a 45-degree angle from the floor. Rotate your legs from the hips and squeeze your heels together. Keep your legs stable and walk your hands down the stretchy cable, articulating your spine and pulling in your core to support the back. Roll your back down until it is on the floor. Make sure you try and move your spine vertebra by vertebra controlling from the powerhouse. Walk your hands back up the cable to a v-sit balanced position.

2. THE ONE HUNDRED
When you perform the one hundred with resistance from the CorePlus Reformer, you get deeper into your core and work the arms as well. Lie on your back with one stretchy cable loop on each foot. Lift you legs to a 45-degree angle from the floor. Make sure the lower back is on the mat and your legs are slightly rotated at the hip. Squeeze your heels together, allowing you to target your inner thighs and buttocks as well. Open your legs for a second and thread the button with the rest of the apparatus through to the back of the legs. Hold on to the other two handles. Lift your head and shoulders off the mat. Pump your arms up and down keeping the arms close to your body and six to eight inches from the floor. Breath smoothly, inhaling for a count of five and exhaling for a count of five, until you reach one hundred. Make sure you keep you lower back on the mat. If you want to go deeper in your core lower your legs. This exercise is great for circulation.

3. DOUBLE STRAIGHT LEG
Put the handle of the stretchy cable on each foot. Legs are at a 90-degree angle from the floor. You can keep your whole torso including your head on the floor or you can raise your head and shoulders off the mat. Each hand gets the remaining handles. Make a fist and bring the hands into the chest with the elbows open to the side. Lower the legs down and up 10 to 12 times. Do slowly with control. Keep your lower back on the mat and take the legs down as far as you comfortably can - keeping the tummy pulled in. Inhale as the legs lower and exhale as you bring them up. Remember the leg position with the legs rotating from the hips and the heels squeezing together.

Healthy Hollywood: Fab Food Friday – Nick Jonas Takes On Diabetes!

Access Hollywood | Healthy Hollywood

Healthy Hollywood: Fab Food Friday – Nick Jonas Takes On Diabetes!

November 18, 2011

At 13, Nick Jonas was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. "I had an emotional breakdown since I really had no idea what diabetes was all about. I wondered, 'why me?' Then I asked myself, 'why not me?' and realized that I might be able to help other kids with diabetes."

For the past 6 years, Nick's mission has been to help and inspire other kids dealing with juvenile diabetes. The teen icon gives freely of his time to charity events to raise awareness and also visit young diabetic kids. Healthy Hollywood applauds Nick Jonas!

Halle Berry and Sharon Stone are also afflicted with diabetes. Yet, it's not just the rich and famous who suffer, over 21 million children and adults in the United States are living with diabetes, and one in three Americans will develop diabetes in their lifetime! That's some serious numbers.

November is American Diabetes Month, so Healthy Hollywood hopes to shed a little light on this serious (and increasingly common) condition. "There is a genetic component to diabetes, which would make a person more likely to develop the condition and an environmental part which involves diet and lifestyle," reveals Nicolette Pace, founder of NutriSource, and she specializes in diabetes self management training. Nicolette adds, "In other words, your genes are carrying a gun and your diet can pull the trigger."

Despite popular belief, there isn't an "eat this and you'll get diabetes" link. However, adult onset diabetes can be set-off by overall weight gain and lousy eating habits. "If you look at a typical American diet you will see that the majority of what is eaten leads to weight gain and obesity which quickly escalates to metabolic problems, pre-diabetes, and finally full-blown diabetes," adds Nicolette.

However, for those suffering with diabetes, it is good advice to eliminate as many hidden fats and sugars from their diet. "Fighting diabetes has a lot to do with managing your overall carbohydrate and calorie intake. If weight gain has been an issue it must be immediately stopped. Therefore, the addition of foods that will fill you up with smaller portions will be key. These include whole plant foods (vegetables, fruits, grains, beans etc.) as their water and fiber content leads to greater fullness from the weight of food," suggests Nicolette.

Studies also suggest working in lean protein foods to stabilize hunger and provide necessary nutrients. Reversing diabetes is possible in its early stages with a strict program.

Nicolette shares with Healthy Hollywood 3 eating tips diabetics should follow…

1. Keep a record of what you eat, how much you have eaten and your blood sugar to highlight the relationship.

2. Learn how to read a food label and know what to look for when you are buying prepared foods.

3. Limit processed foods by developing a shopping list in advance to incorporate as many whole foods as you can. This meal-planning tip will help free you from buying impulse foods.
