Healthy Hollywood: Fab Food Friday – Trisha Yearwood’s ‘Southern Kitchen’!

Healthy Hollywood: Fab Food Friday – Trisha Yearwood’s ‘Southern Kitchen’!

April 20, 2012

“That’s how I grew up, everything revolved around the kitchen if my mom was, who was the primary person cooking, we were all hanging in there with her and then in our family, sat as a family and had dinner,” reveals Trisha Yearwood to Healthy Hollywood.

The country singer is bringing her love of cooking and Southern hospitality to the Food Network. Already the author of two cookbooks, Trisha now has her own cooking show, “Trisha’s Southern Kitchen.” “I thought a cooking show might be cool, but I don’t want to stand behind a counter and just say, ‘then you add a stick of butter,’ but we integrated my friends and family. It became a chance to hang out with the people I love and then we accidentally got some food made.”

Trisha invites viewers into her Nashville kitchen and shares recipes passed down from her family. She’s cooking up some of her favorite comfort foods, like barbequed chicken and mac & cheese, but hopes to add a healthier, lighter twist. “My challenge is to find ways to not lose the flavor and still have that comfort feeling and still have that connection with your mother or your grandmother. You know, back then, my mom would serve broccoli, but it would be smothered in cheese sauce.”

Trisha started to give her recipes a healthy makeover after her mother was diagnosed with breast cancer. Her mother passed away from cancer in 2011, but Trisha hopes to pass on her mom’s new found love of healthy comfort food via her cookbooks and Food Network show. “She taught my sister and me how to make some of these things lighter. In seeing her want to be healthier as healthy as she could be, with what she was going through, [I am now adding] more fruits, more vegetables, and more grains.”

Trisha, who is married to country superstar Garth Brooks, does get a little help in the kitchen from her famous husband. “He’s the guy that will come through the kitchen and say, ‘I love this pasta salad, but can you add this or try that.’ He’s more of an experimenter in the kitchen than I am. But, he’s also the guy that I can say, ‘look, I’ve just made dinner for the last two nights. I don’t want to cook today,’ and he’ll do it.”

“Trisha’s Southern Kitchen” airs on the Food Network on Saturdays at 10:30 AM. Or for more information, check out www.foodnetwork.com/trishas-southern-kitchen.

Healthy Hollywood: Ask Keri Glassman — How Many Calories Does One Need When Breastfeeding?

Healthy Hollywood: Ask Keri Glassman — How Many Calories Does One Need When Breastfeeding?

April 19, 2012

Nutritionist Keri Glassman, who regularly shares her expertise on Access Hollywood and Access Hollywood Live, is answering your nutrition, diet, and health questions.

Want to know which foods to curb sugar cravings? Or, what should you eat before a workout? Ask Keri anything!

Keri will choose one great question a week to be answered Thursday in our Healthy Hollywood column.

To submit questions for Keri, click HERE!

This week’s question is from reader Jody — How many total daily calories does someone need if breastfeeding?

Keri says…

Congrats on your new baby, Jody! It’s so important to take care of your nutrition now more than ever as you’re caring for you and your new baby!

Most mothers require roughly 500 extra calories per day during lactation to keep up with the demands of breastfeeding. However, you may already be consuming adequate calories. I like to focus more on meeting nutrient needs and listening to your body (your hunger quotient will guide you!) versus counting calories. Although, “dieting” during lactation is not appropriate because you need to recover and your baby needs proper nutrition, you can still lose weight while eating a balanced, nutrient-dense diet.

Whether you are breastfeeding or bottle feeding, proper nutrition is important for your recovery from a long nine months! An extra benefit of eating a healthy diet is that proper nutrition will help you cope better with the inevitable fatigue (and even those mood swings!) that new demands of motherhood bring on.

Specific nutrients to focus on:

- Calcium: Your calcium stores were diminished during pregnancy to help your baby grow and develop. Make sure to eat plenty of calcium rich foods to replenish your stores. Try bok choy, spinach, kale, canned salmon, and of course your usual suspects, milk, yogurt and cheese.

- Omega 3s: Omega 3s are critical for your baby’s brain and eye development. If you are breastfeeding, try to incorporate foods high in omega 3s, such as fish and fish oils, walnuts, and flaxseed. Studies have shown that omega 3s also play a role in weight loss. Other foods to try include hemp milk, tofu and fortified eggs.

- Antioxidants: Eat plenty of fruits and vegetables to get the necessary antioxidants to help keep your body as healthy as possible. Antioxidants scavenge free radicals, preventing cellular damage involved in aging, cancer, and a variety of other diseases. Try getting your antioxidant punch from sweet potato, kale, cantaloupe, and artichokes.

- B Vitamins: Eat plenty of whole grains and dark greens to ensure your body gets the B vitamins it needs to maintain proper metabolic pathways. B vitamins play an important role in carbohydrate metabolism, red blood cell formation, and work to promote healthy nerves. A few of my favorite grains are quinoa, amaranth, barley and brown rice.

- Fluids: Make sure to drink a lot of fluid (water especially). If you are breastfeeding, you may be depleting your fluids through the milk you are producing. Try a splash of fresh lemon or sliced fruits like strawberries or oranges for added flavor.

Avoid alcohol, caffeine, smoking, and medications (speak to your MD): Most everything you eat or drink goes directly to your baby through breast milk. Don’t eat or drink anything you wouldn’t want your baby to have!

Healthy Hollywood: Wellness Wednesday – Sip To Your Health!

Healthy Hollywood: Wellness Wednesday – Sip To Your Health!

April 18, 2012

Feeling stressed? Fatigued? Bloated? Whatever your ailment, a cup of tea might be your remedy! Celebrities like Lady Gaga, Lindsay Lohan, and Gwyneth Paltrow are often spotted out on the town with their tea in tow.

While brewing a cup of tea is nothing new, people are discovering all kinds of medicinal benefit. “Many teas contain antioxidants that are believed to help against free radicals that can contribute to cancer, heart disease, diabetes and clogged arteries. Studies have also shown that tea can help encourage weight loss and lower cholesterol,” reveals Linda Appel Lipsius, co-founder and CEO of Teatulia.

Teatulia is an organic line of 10 different teas. Teatulia offers up such brews as peppermint herbal to ginger herbal to green and more traditional black tea. “Although tea is often heralded for bringing about mental alertness, they are often drank as part of a relaxation ritual. Even the caffeinated ones have less caffeine than coffee,” points out Linda.

So, why not pour yourself a cup of wellness. Teatulia reveals to Healthy Hollywood a few of their tea’s benefits.

Peppermint Tea:
-Promotes digestion
-Soothes stomach lining to relieve cramps
-Helps improve concentration and brain performance

Ginger Tea:
-Lessens stress
-Prevents chills, fever and excessive sweating
-Eradicates headaches

Neem Tea:
-Reduces nausea
-Brightens skin
-Treats upper respiratory infections

Tulsi Tea:
-Boosts stamina
-Calms nerves
-Acts as a natural sleep aid

Healthy Hollywood: Try It On Tuesday – Get A High-Tech Workout!

Healthy Hollywood: Try It On Tuesday – Get A High-Tech Workout!

April 17, 2012

Welcome to the era of high-tech fitness!

There seems to be a zillion and one gadgets and apps to meet all of our fitness needs. Whether it’s tracking calories, logging food intake, designing a personalized workout – there’s a gizmo for just about anything – except actually getting it to burn calories for you. Stay tuned coach potatoes, Healthy Hollywood is sure that gadget is in the works!

Healthy Hollywood’s curiosity is peaked by all these inspiration/informative devices. Do they actually work or will they inevitably end up collecting dust in my apparatus graveyard?

Celebrity trainer Jillian Michaels recently teamed up with the high-tech tracker, the BodyMedia FIT Armband. She promises it is “an essential tool to losing weight, getting in shape, and maintaining a healthy lifestyle.” Really? Let’s test her claims!

Healthy Hollywood recruited its favorite New York trainer at Equinox Fitness, Ben Hart. Ben, a competitive boxer, is a go-to fitness guy and is up on all the latest and greatest apparatuses on the market. So, Ben spent a good week putting Jillian’s monitor to the test. “As a trainer, I believe this device is a great device. I think this could be very helpful to some of my clients to help them manage aspects of wellness they find hard to do themselves on a day-to-day basis.”

The BodyMedia FIT Armband is worn throughout the day and monitors all of your daily activity and sleep time (which is important for weight loss). It also offers a personalized workout/diet plan, plus feedback from Ms. Michaels herself when you sync it up to a computer and input data that will then track calories in and out, offers suggested meal plans and workout routine – it basically keeps on top of all things wellness-related. “It makes it very easy to get to know some of your current habits and adjust to make a better you. I would recommend it to my clients whether they’re trying to lose or maintain weight. There’s no more guessing on how much you have burned, just track! Some of my clients find it hard to wear the heart rate monitor around chest,” adds Ben.

The BodyMedia FIT Armband is an investment. The device costs $179.99 plus it requires an activation subscription to Jillian’s online feedback, which is $4 per week. Also, Ben cautions it can be a negative for those who are already compulsive calorie counters. “This counter will feed the problem to an obsessed level. For everyone, I would recommend using it in moderation. I firmly believe that using it too much will drive you nuts about how much you burn relative to how much you are taking in. I think overuse of this product could lead to an obsessive lifestyle. Start off by using it just during workouts to get an overview of current fitness routine. Then, gradually start to use it a couple days a week to keep you conscious and on top of your habits.”

Overall though, Ben thinks this is an awesome device for anyone serious at taking their health and fitness to the next level.

Healthy Hollywood: Get Movin’ Monday – Elisabeth Hasselbeck’s Amazing Race!

Healthy Hollywood: Get Movin’ Monday – Elisabeth Hasselbeck’s Amazing Race!

April 16, 2012

Elisabeth might be known for her verbal sparring on the chat-fest “The View,” but off the couch she’s anything but combative.

Healthy Hollywood caught up with the spunky co-host over the weekend in New York City at a book signing for her cookbook, “Deliciously G-Free.” She’s a huge advocate for all things gluten-free, as she was diagnosed with celiac disease nearly a decade ago.

The petite morning TV star is an absolute delight to be around. She’s laid-back, chatty and interviewing her is like getting together with an old girlfriend. She also gets high marks for her love of working out. “I think I was born a runner,” exclaims Elisabeth!

The busy mother of three reveals to Healthy Hollywood running is the secret to her sanity. “I am better mom and better me when I’ve had a better run. For whatever reason, I am not big on shopping. I like to bargain shop, but I don’t feel a release from that. I will hit the grocery store and I do like going through the aisles with a cart. I am not a yoga person. I don’t go out and dance, so my release will come during a run. It’s really the only time I feel unattached and free to organize my thoughts.”

For the second year in a row, Elisabeth put her love of running to a good cause. She hosted the MORE Magazine/Fitness women’s only half-marathon this Sunday and ran in support of Team NoGii (the name of her gluten-free product line) to raise money for celiac disease research. “First of all, I like to think of it as a full race, not a half. Preparation for the race has been long in the oven. Prep begins 2 or 3 months out. So, it is speed work twice a week and a couple comfortable, easier runs mid-week. I think for any woman at any stage of her life, having a goal like a half marathon is important because it guides your steps – literally,” shares Elisabeth.

Over 10 thousand women joined Elisabeth for the half-marathon. Always competitive, Elisabeth finished the race in an hour and forty minutes, beating last year’s time by 4 minutes.

But, don’t expect her not to be running later this week. “I will run to or from work or run to pick up the kids from school. Whenever I can I run. My husband (she’s married to former NFL player Tim Hasselbeck) is my best running partner because he knows the importance of a good run.

For more on Elisabeth and gluten-free lifestyle, head to www.elisabethhasselbeck.com.
