Healthy Hollywood: Wellness Wednesday – Brooke Burke’s Winning Life Plan!

Healthy Hollywood: Wellness Wednesday – Brooke Burke's Winning Life Plan!

December 28, 2011

Brooke Burke makes taking care of herself a priority! The "Dancing with the Stars" co-host might juggle motherhood, a TV career, and her online business ventures, but she always manages to find time for fitness. She gets to a Pilates class at least three times a week, hits the treadmill a couple times a week and works out to the 45-minute DVD she created with her trainer. "I don't think you need more than an hour to do cardio and full-body toning. I don't have three hours a day to devote to my body, but I do have an hour five days a week," Brooke shares in the January issue of Fitness magazine.

The Fitness magazine cover girl says the one thing she doesn't find time for is sleep.

"I think sleep deprivation is a really bad thing for a woman, not only for her skin and eyes but also for her mood, memory, metabolism, energy, and sex drive," reveals Brooke. She shares with Fitness magazine that she and her husband, actor David Charvet sometimes take "sleepcations," where they will check into a hotel room to be alone and catch up on their rest.

As for what she'd like to change about her life situation in 2012 - Brooke admits there's not much!

"I try not to have a lot of bad habits in my life that I need to break come January. Instead, what I like to do is set myself up for success. Every December, David and I go to the beach and sit there and put the past year into perspective. Then I write out a list of goals, and I jot down quick plans. For 2012, I'd like to do a cookbook of recipes that busy working moms like me can make in 15 minutes or less."

Healthy Hollywood: Get Movin' Monday – Be On The Run Like Heidi Klum!

Healthy Hollywood: Get Movin' Monday – Be On The Run Like Heidi Klum!

December 26, 2011

Fitness trends may come and go, but running is here to stay! Hitting the road for exercise is a simple way to get your heart-pumping and tone your overall body. After all, running doesn't require a pricey gym membership – all you need is a good pair of sneakers and apparel (decent weather - a plus) and you're off and running.

Heidi Klum, Reese Witherspoon, Josh Duhamel, and Fergie are just a few of the celebrities who have a huge passion for running and are often spotted out for a jog in their neighborhood. If you're looking for a new exercise routine in 2012, why not give running a go – it's been a favorite form of exercise for years. "It is hard to come up with a good excuse for missing your run. In terms of fitness benefits, running is a fundamental exercise that builds core strength and aerobic endurance, while burning calories and trimming excess fat. Running conditions your body to better perform than almost any other sport or fitness activity," reveals Carson Caprara, a product line manager at Brooks.

The most important gear to invest in is running shoes. "There are hundreds of shoes to chose from, and likely only a handful that will work perfectly for your individual needs. As a result, I can't stress enough the importance of having an expert look at your foot type and recommend a selection of shoes that are designed for you. Once you have narrowed it down to a couple of shoes, base your selection on the shoe that feels most comfortable on your foot. You should not feel any major pressure points or immediate irritation," adds Carson.

So, if you're thinking of finding your soulmate in 2012 – the experts at Brooks share with Healthy Hollywood 3 basic tips to get you started.

  1. It all starts with proper equipment. It is important to find a pair of running shoes that work efficiently with your foot mechanics and provide an enjoyable running experience that keeps you excited to get back on the road for your next run. There are many great retail stores around the country that can provide a basic foot analysis and provide a recommendation for the proper footwear for you.
  2. Start Slow! The fastest route to a running injury comes from attempting too much, too soon. If this is your first time running, start with a walk/jog routine and progressively reduce the amount of walk time until you can run 3 miles or more at once. It is also a good rule of thumb to not increase your running mileage by more than 15% per week. Listen to your body; if you feel overly fatigued take an extra day off before your next run.
  3. Stretch and add core strength exercise to your routine. Stretch for a minimum of 5 minutes before and after your run. This will help speed recovery, reduce the risk of injury, and improve overall performance. It is also a good idea to add push-ups, sit-ups and other core strength exercises to your weekly regimen.

Healthy Hollywood: Wellness Wednesday – Katie Cassidy’s Holiday Workout Plan!

Healthy Hollywood: Wellness Wednesday – Katie Cassidy's Holiday Workout Plan!

December 21, 2011

"I wish I worked out more during the holidays! I tend to get lazy at times during the holidays, but I have to find motivation with all the cheese and crackers I indulge in," reveals actress Katie Cassidy.

Just like the rest of us folks, the "Gossip Girl" guest star slacks off on her exercise routine during the busy, party-packed holiday season. Healthy Hollywood gets it, but suggests trying to squeeze in a few mini workouts – your mind and body will thank you. "Try to get the gym – even if it's a 20 minute cardio session. Allow yourself to enjoy the yummy food, but don't go overboard. Portion control," adds Katie.

Katie, who understands the importance of staying in shape, is an avid runner, who likes to add kettle bells into her workout regimen to strengthen her core and legs. Yet, to balance things out, the 25-year old has also gotten into yoga to tone and lengthen. Plus, it's a great mind/body regimen that not only works up a sweat, but also helps shed any holiday stress.

Healthy Hollywood met up with the athletically-minded actress at a recent Under Armour event in New York City to launch their Women 2012 collection. Katie joined celebrity trainer Gunnar Peterson to chat about their favorite fitness tips and of course, dish about what's hot in workout gear.

To show off her trim and tone figure, Katie favors the Under Armour collection. "Under Armour is seriously the most comfortable workout gear I own. Not only that, they look awesome. I think as long as you feel good, you'll look good," states Katie. These days, all women, famous or not, often find themselves wearing their workout gear outside the gym to run errands or just lounge around the house.

Plus, a cute workout outfit is always a nice present to find under the Christmas tree. "This year, it's all about the perfect fit and eye-catching colors," reveals Adrienne Lofton Shaw, a marketing executive with Under Armour. "Women are more confident and driven than ever right now, and aren't afraid to show it by wearing super-flattering silhouettes and strong colors that are tailored to their bold lifestyles," adds Adrienne. UA has a full line of comfy yet flattering performance pieces from pants to footwear to sports bra. "The Armour Bra is a revolutionary new sports bra that is customizable to your exact band and cup size. It's designed with strategically placed super stretch and mesh panels that are made to move with you," states Adrienne.

For more information on Under Armour's fitness collection, head to www.underarmour.com.

Healthy Hollywood: Get Movin’ Monday – Pedal Yourself Fit Like Katie Holmes!

Healthy Hollywood: Get Movin' Monday – Pedal Yourself Fit Like Katie Holmes!

December 19, 2011

Katie Holmes needs a fierce, kick-butt fitness routine to keep up with her action-loving hubby, Tom Cruise.

When the actress is in New York, she gets her adrenaline pumping at the indoor cycling phenom SoulCycle. This boutique studio is a magnet for fitness-loving celebs, Iike Kelly Ripa, Brooke Shields and even Chelsea Clinton got into wedding day shape here.

As Healthy Hollywood starts thinking about its fitness game plan for 2012, I am definitely putting spinning on the list.

While indoor cycling has been around for over a decade, there's a bit of a spinning makeover that's taking place. For starters, SoulCycle isn't just about putting the pedal to the medal and blasting the fat off just your legs; instead it's a full body workout.

"At SoulCycle riders use one pound weights on the bike, simultaneously toning the upper body and core," states Elizabeth Cutler, SoulCycle co-founder. "SoulCycle originates all movements from the core. Instead of being just a lower body workout that builds thigh muscles, at SoulCycle, riders originate all of their movements from their CORE, so riders end up with strong, tight abs… instead of a push DOWN (like typical indoor cycling classes) SoulCycle's workout is a pull UP to tighten, strengthen and define your ABS."

Besides working with weights, the SoulCycle ride also includes modified push-ups and core twists – all while keeping your feet pedaling and rocking out to a mix of pop and hip hop hits. Yes, it's a hearty 45-minute sweat session that can burn up to 700 calories – depending on how hard you push it. Like it! Perfect way to start the New Year burn!

"SoulCycle's workout turns people's bodies into what they want to look like today – which is strong and lean with defined abs and core, and arms," adds Elizabeth. Yet, if you're intimidated by the SoulCycle intensity – don't be. Cycling classes, no matter where you take them, can be adapted for all fitness levels. "At SoulCycle, we ride in the candlelight so the intimidation factor of the other riders is minimized; however, we encourage new riders to have fun and ride at their own pace. If the instructor says to turn up the resistance and you are working at your capacity, it is okay to turn it down."

Right now SoulCycle has 7 studios in the New York area and Miami, but is heading to LA in January and is expected to open in Washington D.C. However, you can still get in on the SoulCycle vibe with a limited edition grapefruit-scented candle by Jonathan Adler. The candle will give your home or fitness space the same soulful aura as celebs' favorite cycling hot spot.

Plus, some of the proceeds will be donated to Action for Healthy Kids, which helps prevent childhood obesity. Check it out at www.soul-cycle.com.

Healthy Hollywood: Fab Food Friday – Have A Happy Vegan Holiday!

Healthy Hollywood: Fab Food Friday – Have A Happy Vegan Holiday!

December 16, 2011

Call it a trend or a lifestyle makeover, but either way being vegan is a Hollywood phenomenon! Alicia Silverstone, Natalie Portman, Anne Hathaway are just a few of the famous faces saying "no thanks" to meat, dairy, and eggs. The vegan movement (is a vegetarian diet that excludes all animal-derived ingredients) is rapidly moving into the mainstream.

"Vegans can eat a variety of delicious dishes from Fettuccine Alfredo to Hot Fudge Sundaes – as long as everything is made without animal products. The best part is that vegan ingredients are naturally low in saturated fat, cholesterol-free, and packed with protein, fiber, and nutrients," states vegan chef Chloe Coscarelli, winner of the Food Network's "Cupcake Wars."

So, how is a vegan supposed to survive the holidays and not insult all their meat-loving party hosts? After all, if your family is anything like mine, they love their red meat – and the veggies are certainly not the night's star dish. "The best way to make the host aware of your vegan diet is by offering to bring a vegan dish or dessert to the party that everyone can enjoy. That way, you'll have a back-up dish to turn to in case your Aunt Mimi makes a vegan casserole that has "just a little bit" of pork in it. Bottom line: don't be shy to come prepared!" suggests Chloe.

Chloe shares with Healthy Hollywood one of her favorite festive vegan dishes.

Creamy Pumpkin Penne with Crispy Sage and Toasted Pecans
Serves 4 to 6

Ingredients:

1 pound penne, cooked according to package directions

2 tablespoons olive oil

1 onion, roughly chopped

4 cloves garlic, minced

1 (14-ounce) can organic pumpkin OR 2 cups roasted
butternut squash

2 tablespoons tomato paste

2 cups soy, almond, or rice milk

1 teaspoon ground nutmeg

2 teaspoons maple syrup

3 teaspoons sea salt

½ teaspoon freshly ground black pepper

2 tablespoons canola oil

8 fresh sage leaves, whole

Sea salt

½ cup toasted pecans, roughly chopped

3 tablespoons chopped fresh sage

Directions:

Bring a large pot of heavily salted water to a boil. Add penne and cook according to package directions. Drain and return to pot.

To make the Pumpkin Cream Sauce: In a large skillet, heat oil and sauté onions until soft. Add garlic and let cook a few more minutes. Remove from heat. In a blender, puree the onion mixture, pumpkin, tomato paste, nondairy milk, nutmeg, maple syrup, salt, and pepper until smooth.

To make the Crispy Sage: Heat 2 tablespoons oil in a small skillet until a small piece of sage sizzles when added to the oil. Fry the remaining sage leaves 4 at a time, flipping once, until crispy (about 1 minute total). Watch the sage leaves carefully to make sure that they do not burn. Let them drain on a paper towel and season lightly with salt.

To assemble the pasta: Toss hot pasta with Pumpkin Cream Sauce, toasted pecans, and fresh sage. Garnish with crispy sage and dig in!

Healthy Hollywood: Wellness Wednesday — Head Off Holiday Stress!

Healthy Hollywood: Wellness Wednesday — Head Off Holiday Stress!

December 14, 2011

Heads up! The holidays are fun and festive but also frenzied. Between frantic gift shopping runs to the mall and jam-packed party schedules, the most Zen of us can end up feeling frazzled! Just thinking of all the things I have left to do before Christmas gets my heart racing.

Slow down – breathe – and indulge in some relaxing me-time. A perfect antidote to the holiday madness is a stress reducing head massage. "The head has many sensory points aligned with major organs in your body. Especially since it's closet to the brain and the eyes. A head massage will give you an allover release and will affect the majority of your body," reveals hairstylist and shiatsu expert, Fabio Scalia. At his signature salon in New York City, Fabio offers haircuts, along with toxin-releasing head massages. "Dancing with the Stars" hotties Maks and Val Chmerkovskiy head to Fabio's whenever they're in town to de-stress before a performance.

"This therapeutic, soothing treatment removes the pressure from your follicles and releases stress by massaging pressure points in the scalp and only takes 2 minutes," adds Fabio. According to the wellness website Livestrong, a head massage also helps to increase blood flow to your scalp and better blood flow means the good nutrients go where they're supposed and the bad toxins get released.

Plus, you don't need to jet to New York to get a head massage – look for treatments at your local salon, or even better do a head and scalp self-massage. "Close your eyes, rotate the skin around the cranium. A trick is to see if your skin doesn't move much when you rotate then you have a lot of tension in the scalp and need to release it," suggests Fabio.

For more on Fabio, check out www.fabioscalia.com
