Healthy Hollywood: Get Movin' Monday – Paula Patton's Perfect Mommy Workout!

January 30, 2012

"I have to tell you, as a fairly new mom, the idea of being able to do a 7 to 30 minute workout and know it's enough is pretty amazing," Paula Patton reveals to Healthy Hollywood about her new workout craze – CrossFit.

This high-intensity group training regimen combines cardio and strength training with short rest intervals and optimizes time spent at the gym.

Paula hails CrossFit her "perfect mommy workout." "I mean because it's so hard to find the time [to hit the gym], but you need to because something about when you workout the endorphins it lets out - the stress that you have just melts away," adds Paula.

Healthy Hollywood caught up with the "Mission: Impossible" star at Reebok's launch event for their new campaign – "The Sport of Fitness Has Arrived." The fitness brand has teamed up with CrossFit to motivate people to come to together and workout. "You go run on a treadmill it's very isolating…so the idea of making fitness more of a sport and team activity is really appealing," reveals the actress.

Paula, 36, is determined to keep up some of her fitness mojo she adopted during her training for "Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol." Just five months after giving birth to her son in April 2010, she began two and a half hour daily training sessions. "After having a baby and then getting the role and having to do that much intense workout, I certainly didn't want to go home and give it all up. My trainer taught me so many different things – marital arts and various styles of kickboxing and boxing and capoeira. It's important to mix it up, because it keeps it interesting. You don't want to get bored in your workout routine."

Paula tries to sneak away from home and fit in a workout "almost everyday" and variety is certainly her game plan. "Shocking your body a little bit by trying new things is definitely the way to stay fit!"

Healthy Hollywood: Fab Food Friday – ‘Glee’s’ Darren Criss Goes Mediterranean!

Healthy Hollywood: Fab Food Friday – ‘Glee’s’ Darren Criss Goes Mediterranean!

January 27, 2012

‘Glee’s’ Darren Criss took Broadway by storm during his 3-week run in “How To Succeed In Business Without Really Trying.” The ‘Glee’ sensation proved he had the chops to sing and dance on stage – a gig that takes tremendous endurance.

To help keep up his energy and physical shape, Criss ate a Mediterranean diet, which emphasizes seasonal vegetables and fruits, olive oil, whole grains and moderate amounts of meat and wine. “The Mediterranean diet is not a diet, as in ‘go on a diet,’ even though it is a great way to lose weight. Rather, it is a lifestyle - including foods, activities, meals with friends and family, and wine in moderation with meals,” reveals James Mallios, owner of the New York City restaurant, Amali. Criss dined at Amali, during his stay in the city.

U.S. News & World Report hailed a Mediterranean diet as one of the best overall diets. Besides promoting a healthier lifestyle, following this type of eating plan can help lower the risk of cardiovascular problems and reduce blood pressure and bad cholesterol.

Also, the Mediterranean diet doesn’t ban any particular foods and the meals can be simple to prepare. James shares with Healthy Hollywood a very easy fish recipe from Amali.

Porgy Stuffed with Meyer Lemon and Fennel:

Ingredients:
1 Meyer lemon
1 cup of fennel leaves
salt & pepper
olive oil

Rinse and clean the porgy, remove the gills and fins. Stuff the fish with sliced Meyer lemon and fennel leaves. Brush porgy with olive oil and season with salt and pepper. Grill or roast the fish at 350-degrees until the fish is golden and flaky.

Reserve the fennel bulb for a fennel and parmesan salad, dressed with olive oil and a simple Meyer lemon vinaigrette.

Healthy Hollywood: Wellness Wednesday – Stacy Keibler's Fit 'N Fabulous Workout Wear!

January 25, 2012

With her killer legs and rockin' body, it's no surprise George Clooney likes to keep his girlfriend, Stacy Keibler, close to his side at red carpet events.

Before George's gal went on "Dancing With The Stars," the former WWE diva wrestled her way to fame – literally. So, it's no surprise the 5' 11" beauty is in awesome shape – and she knows how to flaunt her figure in style! Why hide it, if you've got it, right?

"Having the right workout wear is essential for motivation! To ensure a safe, fun, and productive workout, you'll want to be certain you feel comfortable and feel your best throughout," states Michelle Lovitt, a celebrity trainer for the yoga and fitness line, Zobha. It's a comfy yet form-fitting line favored by celebs like Stacy, January Jones, and Reese Witherspoon. Zobha is celeb-approved on the four most important aspects to look for in fitness wear: moisture-wicking, breathability, quick-dry, and shape retention. "For activities like Bikram yoga, you'll want some moisture-wicking clothing. If you're a runner, you'll definitely want something that holds your muscles in a secure position," reveals Michelle.

Plus, in these money-pinching times, it's good to have workout gear that looks just as good inside the gym as it does outside. "Women are definitely using workout wear for everyday hang out gear; they're busy and constantly on the go," adds Michelle. The right stylish athletic apparel can go straight from spin class to grocery shopping or a meet-up with friends.

If you're going to splurge on just a few pieces – here are Michelle's 3 Zobha must haves.

1. Low Impact Racerback Tank:
A flattering A-line tank that is longer in the back for full rear coverage.

2. Lightweight V-neck:
This is the perfect piece to layer over a tank for an indoor workout while your body is warming up or wear on an outdoor run.

3. The Evolve Pant:
A comfy, leg-lengthening fit that maintains its shape work after workout – no baggy knees!

Healthy Hollywood: Get Movin’ Monday – Get A Gym Body At Home!

Healthy Hollywood: Get Movin' Monday – Get A Gym Body At Home!

January 23, 2012

Stop fighting the treadmill lines and the over-crowded classes; instead create your own gym routine at home. "All you need is a little space to move and the desire to improve your health," reveals fitness expert, Lisa Wheeler, who is the program director of DailyBurn Fitness, an online health and fitness destination that delivers personalized workout information. "If you can lunge to the front and back and do a side lunge right and left, you have plenty of room to do our workouts. For floor work, all you need is enough room to do a push up," adds Lisa.

Plus, there's no need for bulky or pricey training equipment, a lot of the DailyBurn workouts are designed to use your body weight only, or offer accessible alternative props if you don't have a particular piece of equipment. "DailyBurn features six personal trainers with diverse fitness philosophies and backgrounds. Each trainer provides various workouts ranging from 10 minutes to one hour. It's like having a personal trainer in the palm of your hand – or better still, like having a gym full of elite instructors available to you wherever you are, 24/7," reveals Lisa. There's no need to rush like a maniac to get to your favorite class or be bummed when the class is filled. Instead, you can workout whenever you feel like and for as long as you want.

If you want a total body conditioning that doesn't require equipment, here's an example of a 25 minute routine.

1. Pick 4 exercises that target all the major muscle groups of the body (Alternating Lunges, Push Ups, Alternating Squat Kicks, and a Bear Squat). A DailyBurn instructor will go through each routine and teach correct form.
2. Get a timer and set for one minute repeats.
3. Do 5 reps of each exercise (alternating move count right and left side as 1 rep) as fast as you can with good form and full range of motion within one minute. Any remaining time within that minute is your recovery – breathe, drink water, towel off.
4. Repeat the 1 minute bouts for 14 rounds (trust us, by round 8 you will begin to feel the burn!)
5. The entire workout should be about 25 minutes (4 minute warm up and 6 minute cool down and stretch.)

DailyBurn also includes nutritional dietary guidance, plus the app tracks your program and changes up your workout routine. And, it's only $9.99/month – a whole lot cheaper than a gym. For a free week trial, head to www.dailyburn.com.

Healthy Hollywood: Fab Food Friday – Take Preventative Action Against Diabetes!

Healthy Hollywood: Fab Food Friday – Take Preventative Action Against Diabetes!

January 20, 2012

Butter-loving celebrity chef Paula Deen set off a hailstorm of controversy after she announced her diabetes diagnosis. Deen's Southern-style kitchen is famous for its fatty, decadent recipes – hardly the ingredients to a healthy lifestyle – especially if you are diabetic.

While Deen has yet to give details on how and if she'll overhaul her show and cook up healthier meals/more diabetic-friendly meals, there is a positive to take from this food debacle. People are talking about diabetes and thinking about ways to change their eating habits to take preventative action.

Over 25 million Americans have type 2 diabetes and nearly 25 percent of the population are believed to have prediabetes – a condition of slightly elevated blood sugar levels that often develops into diabetes within 10 years. Yet, only 4 percent of those folks know. Scary numbers, indeed! So, it's important for us all to get better educated!

First off, it's good to remember, diabetes is not a culinary death sentence. Yes, it's time to nix the fast foods and high sugar junk (but shouldn't we all do that anyway)! "A healthy meal plan for people with diabetes is generally the same as a healthy diet for anyone – low in fat (especially saturated and trans fat), moderate in salt and sugar, with meals based on whole grain foods, vegetables and fruits," reveals nutritionist Keri Glassman of New York City's Nutritious Life.

Keri shares with Healthy Hollywood 10 tips to help diabetes-proof your life!

1. A vegetarian diet can help lower the risk of type 2 diabetes.
2. Include dried beans (like kidney or pinto beans) and lentils into your meals.
3. Cut back on high calorie snack foods and desserts like chips, cookies, cakes and full-fat ice cream.
4. Opt for non-fat dairy, such as skim milk, non-fat yogurt and non-fat cheese.
5. Choose liquid oils for cooking instead of solid fats that can be high in saturated and trans fat.
6. Add a little vinegar to daily menu, such as vinegar-based salad dressing. Vinegar helps slow the rate at which body absorbs sugar from food.
7. Cinnamon and other spices and herbs are a great alternative to using butter, salt, and processed meats to add flavor to food.
8. Opt for a high soluble fiber cereal, such as steel-cut oatmeal, which helps to make blood sugar happy because fiber is digested slowly.
9. Try and substitute hearty veggies, like eggplant, spinach, portabella mushrooms, and zucchini for the meat in your favorite meat-based recipes.
10. Eating too much of even healthful foods can lead to weight gain. Watch your portion sizes.

Healthy Hollywood: Wellness Wednesday – Avoid An Arch Enemy!

Healthy Hollywood: Wellness Wednesday – Avoid An Arch Enemy!

January 18, 2012

Want to look younger? Appear less stressed? Believe it or not – a good eyebrow shaping can do wonders for your beauty inside and out. "Brows are the blueprint for balanced and proportioned features; they can bring every feature into harmony and enhance our looks. They can also give you an instant eyelift. Every celebrity knows that great brows signal sophistication, you wouldn't be able to achieve a red carpet look without well shaped brows," reveals Hollywood's eyebrow guru, Anastasia Soare.

Heidi Klum, Michelle Williams, Megan Fox and Debra Messing were just a few of the A-listers who had Anastasia groom their eyebrows for Sunday's Golden Globes.

Celebs know that the right shape can help lessen imperfections and boost confidence on and off the red carpet. Anastasia shares with Healthy Hollywood a few common beauty flaws (that affect even seemingly perfect celebrities) and how to correct them. "For a wider nose bridge: Keep your brows closer to the bridge (less space between brows) this will narrow the gap visually, which slims the nose bridge," reveals Anastasia, who also shares, "For a full face: Keep a full arch that is longer on the ends, the thicker arch will create a diamond shape face, which slims the overall appearance and brings out the cheekbones."

Just like fashion, eyebrows can be shaped or styled to compliment different moods or occasions.

Feeling Glam?

Think Angelina Jolie or Megan Fox! "A glam brow is synonymous with a high arch," states Anastasia, who suggests, "Brows should be trimmed and always maintained with a clear brow gel. The goal here is to keep your arches high, but make sure that the arch doesn't line up above your iris. It has to be to the right (past the iris)."

In A Casual State Of Mind?

Jennifer Connelly has the perfect set of thicker brows. Try not to over trim brows – this will allow you to do both a thicker and glam brow look. Experiment with a brow powder and a tinted brow gel on top to create the illusion of heavier brow. "I love this trick for creating the appearance of a thicker brow," reveals Anastasia.

To learn how to shape your eyebrows and check out various brow products, head over to www.anastasia.net.
