John Barrowman: No plans for returning to Doctor Who

Fresh from his appearance in Torchwood: Miracle Day, John Barrowman has just embarked on a new UK tour offering audiences an evening of song, dance and stories.

Barrowman, 44, has also appeared in Desperate Housewives and as the voice of cosmic entity The Stranger in Marvel's animated show Super Hero Squad.

But it's as Captain Jack Harkness that he's best known and he admits the diverse audience of his tour does include a contingent of "Woodies and Whovians", the name given to devoted fans of Torchwood and Doctor Who respectively.

Sci-fi fans first saw Barrowman appear as time-travelling conman Captain Jack in 2005's Doctor Who episode The Empty Child. The popular character stayed on as a companion of Christopher Eccleston's Ninth Doctor, attaining immortality and then taking the lead in Torchwood, which centres on a British secret organisation set up to combat alien threats.

This summer saw Torchwood's fourth series, the 10-episode Miracle Day in which the team investigated a mysterious phenomenon that meant no one on Earth was able to die.

In an interview promoting his tour, Barrowman says he is thrilled by the show's success and addresses fan debate on whether he'll ever return to Doctor Who.

On the continuing success for Torchwood, he said: "I can't believe it. I was only meant to be a five-episode character in Doctor Who and it's turned out to be a huge success in its own right with Torchwood and Captain Jack.

"The American audiences have taken to him. It's quite overwhelming and quite amazing to be a part of something like that to spread what I call the best of British television worldwide."

So does he fancy a return to his Doctor Who roots?

"Everybody keeps asking me and if I'm offered I would love to," says Barrowman. "I think it would be great. There is no plan to do that. No one has come forward. I don't think it'll happen. I'm always open for it, but who knows?"

And if he could use Captain Jack's time gauntlet and go back 20 years, what advice would he give his younger self?

"The advice I'd give him is the exact same advice I was given: Don't want anything too quickly, enjoy yourself and only accept jobs because you want to do them."

Barrowman will next be materialising on stage for his upcoming panto: "We're doing Robinson Crusoe And The Caribbean Pirates, and I will be starring in it with The Krankies. I will be also co-directing it this year. I love doing pantomime. I love the fact that it introduces children to theatre; it's also great family entertainment and, to be honest with you, I have a great time doing it."
